What is Teachery?

Picture it: The internet, 2014.

Jason Zook and Gerlando Piro had the brilliant idea to create a platform for creating online courses…a platform designed to be affordable, flexible, and easy for creative online biz owners to use.

That platform is Teachery.

Simplicity is a big deal here. There’s a bit of a learning curve when you start out, but it isn’t a steep one.

When I signed up, I was able to create my first course in just a few hours, and I didn’t need any technical skills to do it.

I’ve been SUPER impressed by Teachery’s range of features:

  • Unlimited courses, lessons, and students
  • Autosave – live editing means your content is automatically updated and saved
  • Embed graphics, widgets, audio, video, and slides – I have a lot of fun with this!
  • Customize courses with the Style Editor
  • Payment pages, recurring payments, coupon codes
  • Bump offers on payment pages
  • Hubs and memberships {yes, REALLY!}
  • Sales pages, landing pages, and email capture pages
  • Integrations for email and automation
  • Tracking and analytics
  • Course comments
  • Course lesson scheduling {unlock modules/lessons automatically on a schedule}
  • Welcome and course-completed emails
  • Affiliate management for YOUR courses {you can be a Teachery affiliate, too}
  • Rock star-level customer support {poor Jason has received WAY too many chats from me!}

Feature Highlights

There’s a built-in payment system that allows you to sell your courses directly to your audience but you can just as easily use other platforms, like ThriveCart.

A number of file types are supported so you can create courses that feature videos, audio, and PDFs.

Another great thing about Teachery is that it is affordable. Unlike some other course platforms that charge a percentage of your earnings on top of a monthly/yearly subscription, Teachery does NOT do this.

If you’re looking for a course platform that’s budget-friendly, robust, and SUPER easy to use, I highly recommend giving Teachery a try.

What Does Teachery Cost?

Teachery is probably THE most affordable course creation platform, especially when you factor in everything you get in your subscription, compared to alternatives.

First, you can get a free 2-week trial to see if it’s a good fit.

Then, if you like it or you just know you need something now, you can sign up for Teachery for $49 a month or pay $470 annually, which saves you about 20%.

The monthly plan is an excellent option for those who are just getting started or prefer to pay month by month.

The yearly plan is a better option for those who want to save money in the long run.

Either way, Teachery is affordable, you get a ton included in the price, and if you compare it to other platforms, this is the least expensive option when matched up feature-to-feature.

There aren’t any “levels” or “tiers,” either – you get everything Teachery offers included in your plan.

Both plans come with all the features that Teachery offers, and you can cancel anytime without any penalty.

I found it refreshing that Teachery doesn’t charge any transaction fees or additional fees. This means that you get to keep 100% of your course sales, and you don’t have to worry about any hidden costs.

Create and Customize Your Online Course…It’s Easy!

Now that you’re ready to use Teachery, let’s talk about creating your course, customizing it, and organizing your content into lessons and sections.

After logging in, you can’t miss the “Create New Course or Theme” button. Click that to get your course foundation set up.

From here, you’ll begin customizing the look and feel of your course and add your content.

Teachery Templates and Design

Teachery offers two course templates you can use as the foundation of the look and feel of your course – the Minimal Template and the Sidebar Template.

Both of these are customizable and easy to use.

I prefer the Minimal Template, which has a sleek, modern layout that allows for easy navigation and a clean look. Here’s what it looks like with NO customization/color/content:

And here is what one of my completed courses looks like after quite a bit of customization and content:

The Sidebar Template is a more conventional layout that features a sidebar on the left-hand side of the page. This template reminds me of just about any Teachable or Thinkific course.

I think Podia uses this layout, too, but I’m not 100% sure.

With either template, you can use the custom CSS feature to add even more style and flair to your courses.

Teachery Themes

Themes have recently been added as an option when creating a course. These are pre-designed “plug-n-play” course templates you can use that have certain elements done for you.

When you choose to create a course using a theme, your colors, lessons, etc. will be set up and you can go in and tweak as you see fit.

Teachery themes come with pre-designed images, colors, and fonts but they can be changed based on your preferences.

Styling Your Course

In addition to the course templates and themes, Teachery also offers a Style Editor that allows you to customize the look and feel of your course.

With this tool, you can change the font, color scheme, and other design elements to match your brand or personal style.

This is what makes it possible for each course to look different!

OR you can stick with your brand colors to keep things cohesive but spice things up by getting creative with images.

With the Style Editor, we have complete control over how our courses look. From the hover states of our buttons, background colors, sub-lesson colors, and even the lines in the quick jump section of the course, we are able to customize every aspect of our courses.

Pretty cool, right?

The styling can be applied to landing and payment pages, too.

The pages themselves are easy enough to create but you can also style them as you like! The two pages below are payment pages from a couple of my resources…

These are two real-life examples of Teachery payment pages I've created for my own courses.

The styling options are simple enough that you could create a beautiful, branded course right away!

Adding Content to Your Course

Adding content to your course is easy enough. Teachery is kind of like a WYSIWYG or block-builder website builder.

There are sections for headings, subheadings, text, images, and more.

Here’s a snapshot from the backend of one of my courses:

A sneak peek at the back end of one of my Teachery courses.

As you can see, you can add headings and titles, body text, images, links, and files.

It’s also easy to add video – you’ll need to host your video elsewhere, like Vimeo or YouTube, but then you can grab the link to your video and add it to your course.

This is definitely simplifying, but if you can create a document or a blog post, you can create a course with Teachery!

Payment and Transaction Features

As a Teachery user, I can confidently say that the platform provides a seamless payment experience for both course creators and students.

Payment Options

Teachery supports payments through Stripe, a secure payment processor, which means that course creators can accept payments from all major credit cards.

At this time, PayPal is not an option for taking payments.

Payment Pages

When you set up your course, you can create custom payment pages that match your branding.

These pages are easy to set up and can be completely customized with colors, images, text, and videos.

Payment pages are mobile-responsive, too, which means that students can easily enroll and make payments from their smartphones or tablets.

Recurring Payment Pages

You can also set up recurring payment pages, which are ideal for courses that require a subscription or ongoing payments. These pages can be set up to automatically charge students on a recurring basis.

Transaction Fees

Teachery does not charge any transaction fees, which means that course creators can keep all of the revenue from their courses.

However, Stripe charges a fee of 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. This fee is standard for all Stripe transactions.

So, let’s say you decide to use Teachery and create a course that costs $100…

$100 – $3.20 {2.90 + $0.30} = $96.80

And remember, there are no extra fees on Teachery’s side, so you would make $96.80 each time someone buys your course.

Teachery’s Support and Customer Service

Teachery offers excellent support and customer service for its users and as a user myself, I have found their customer support to be knowledgeable, responsive, and friendly.

They offer various channels of support, including chat, email, a knowledge base, and a private Slack community.

Their help documentation is extensive and covers just about anything you can think of. I have found it to be an awesome resource when I need quick answers to my questions. However, if I still need help, I can message or email my question and I usually get a response within 24 hours.

One of the best things about Teachery’s customer service is that they are always looking for ways to improve their product and services. They actively engage with their community, seeking feedback from their users and they actually use this feedback to make their platform better!

Teachery’s Features and Tools

My favorite Teachery feature {feature-y? LOL} is that it’s a creative container for my content…content that doesn’t necessarily have to be structured as a “course.”

It’s also nice that once you have Teachery, you can create as many courses as you like…no limits on the number of courses and resources you can make.

There’s also no cap on the number of students you can have. This means that we can grow our audiences and reach as many students as Iwe want without worrying about hitting any limits.

Teachery’s student management tools are great, too, and allow us to track progress, communicate with students, and more.

Teachery’s course editor is another standout feature. It’s simple and easy to use, yet powerful enough to create engaging and interactive courses. Adding text, images, videos, quizzes, and more is super easy and can be done with just a few clicks.

Teachery also offers a range of customization options, so I can make my courses look and feel exactly how I want them to.

Robust course and customer analytics tools are also included. I like that I can track how my courses are performing, see which lessons are most popular, and get insights into my students’ behavior. This allows me to optimize my courses and improve the learning experience for my students.

Teachery’s Integrations

Teachery integrates with several tools. Most notably:

Mailchimp is an email marketing tool that allows you to create and send newsletters, promotional emails, and automated campaigns. With Teachery’s Mailchimp integration, you can automatically add students to your email list when they sign up for your course.

This integration helps you keep in touch with your students and promote your future courses.

I don’t have any experience with it, but ConvertKit is an email marketing tool that’s pretty popular among online biz owners. With Teachery’s ConvertKit integration, you can automatically add students to your email list and tag them based on their course progress.

This integration allows you to send targeted emails to your students and increase engagement.

Zapier Integration

Zapier helps you automate tasks between different apps. With Teachery’s Zapier integration, you can connect Teachery to over 3,000 other apps, including Google Sheets, Trello, and Slack.

This integration allows you to automate tasks such as adding students to your CRM, sending notifications to your team, and more.

Additional Integrations

In addition to the above integrations, Teachery also supports embedding content from various services, including Wistia, YouTube, Vimeo, Soundcloud, Prezi, Canva, Google Slides, and Slideshare.

You can add code like custom HTML, widgets, links, and files to make your courses highly interactive.

Pros and Cons of Teachery for Courses and Content

In evaluating Teachery as an online course platform, I thought it would be a good idea to list out some pros and cons.

Here’s what I think:

  • Affordable pricing: Teachery is one of the most affordable online course platforms on the market {if not the most affordable}, making it an attractive option for beginners who are just starting to create and sell courses.
  • User-friendly interface: it’s SO simple and easy to use, making it a good choice even for those who are not tech-savvy.
  • Customizable templates: Teachery recently launched brand-new course templates that make it EVEN EASIER to make pretty courses students will LOVE.
  • Drip course content: Teachery allows you to deliver course content to your students in a drip format, which can help increase engagement and revenue. I’ve used this feature quite a few times.
  • Marketing tools: You get marketing tools that help you analyze customer behavior and improve your course content.
  • More than just courses: You can use Teachery to creatively deliver all kinds of content in all kinds of ways.

  • You can’t use PayPal to take payments. For me, this is a bummer but not a deal-breaker.
  • Limited features for more advanced/specialized needs. While Teachery has all the necessary features for beginners, it may not have enough advanced features for more experienced course creators. I can’t say this is true for ME and my needs, but it’s something to consider depending on what you want to create.
  • No quizzes or self-directed learning functionality. Teachery does not offer quizzes or self-directed learning functionality, which may be a drawback for some course creators. While I don’t ever see needing features for self-directed learning, I’d love to see quizzes and maybe forms.
  • No built-in email marketing. While you can set up “welcome” and “course completed” emails, Teachery does not have a built-in email marketing feature, which means you will need to use a separate email marketing tool to communicate with your students. {Not a biggie, really.}

For me, the pros FAR outweigh the cons.

Teachery vs Other Course Creation Platforms

Teachery versus other course platforms - there's no contest, in my opinion...Teachery wins out!

I think Teachery blows other popular platforms like Teachable, Thinkific, and Kajabi right out of the water. When you compare Teachery to other platforms, it’s obvious that Teachery stands out in several areas.

One of the biggest advantages of Teachery is its affordability. While some platforms charge transaction fees on top of monthly fees, Teachery has a simple pricing model with no transaction fees. This means you can keep more of what you make!

There’s also a strong focus on design simplicity, making it easy for beginners to create and sell courses.

You get all the necessary course creation and selling features without the “fluff.” Course creation and selling are WAY easier because you don’t get bogged down or distracted by unnecessary things.

You can customize Teachery beautifully and do as much or as little as you like.

If you like the look of plain and simple courses, there’s a template for that.

If you want a pretty course but don’t really have the graphic and design skills, there are ready-made templates you can use and customize.

Or you can start with a basic template and customize it all – colors, fonts, graphics, CSS, you name it!
